All around the island of Maui, palm trees lean out over the water. It makes for a beautiful picture, but it got me to thinking… why are they all leaning? Further inland, trees grow straight and tall, so why do those on the beach seem to be reaching for the water?
There are a few theories, and, interestingly enough, understanding the reasons these tropical beauties lean may help you strengthen your business.
Theory #1: They’re Reaching for the Sun
Maui’s beautiful water reflects the sun’s light like a mirror. The trees lean toward the light and soak up the rays… from both the surface of the water and from the sun.
What or whom are you leaning toward? Are you reaching out to people who can help you stretch and grow? Or is your growth being stunted because of the negative influences in your life? Choose to lean toward the warmth and encouragement of those who will help you grow.
Theory #2: Strong Seaside Winds Push Them
This theory is a little less plausible because the wind coming off the water is likely to be much stronger than any wind moving from inland toward the sea. However, I’m sure you’ve seen this theory played out after a storm. Hurricane-force winds can create some oddly shaped trees. The alternative is for the tree to snap and break under the force of mighty winds, and many do.
For better or for worse, our circumstances change us. We can allow tough times to break us. Or we can hang on, bend and shift and continue to grow and produce. The next time you feel like you’re about to snap, take a deep breath and step back from the situation. Remember that even when times are difficult, if you can hold on and keep doing the right things, you can make it through the storm.
Theory #3: They’re Compensating for Shifting Sands
The palm trees have a strong root system, but the trees nearest the water are exposed to the effect of erosion and constantly shifting sands. As their foundation moves, the trees compensate by leaning to maintain their balance. The fact that they’re able to constantly adjust to a changing foundation is admirable, but it’s not a practice you should have to adopt to keep your business or your life from toppling.
The New Testament parable advises us to build our house on a strong foundation, and not on shifting sands. Build your business on a foundation of good habits and solid practices. Know the basics of your business: product knowledge, customer service, inventory and finances. If you will commit to working with integrity and consistency, you can build a solid, stable and profitable business.
